3D Workshop Configurator
Decathlon, leader of sportswear retail in France, and implanted in 28 countries, entrusts 3Dswipe with the development of its real-time 3D Workshop configuration system for a worldwide rollout.
The goal: allow Decathlon stores around the world to conceive, organize and view their customized workshop area in real-time 3D, have visibility on its associated costs before an actual setup on site.
A tailor-made real-time 3D configuration system
In order to line up with the specifics of each single project, in the sense that each store has different dimensions, constraints and product ranges, the solution developed by 3Dswipe enables dynamic generation of custom 3D scenes.
The first action required by the 3D configurator is the definition of the workshop’s dimensions. Two distinct zones are pre-set: the customer area and the storage area.
A grid is then generated based on the input, and both zones can be positioned freely.
The 3D catalogue:
a comprehensive and scalable library
The user has direct access to a 3D object library, each one corresponding the different activity posts used in Decathlon stores. The different posts gather everything that is needed for a Decathlon repair Workshop: parts, wheels and tires, rollers and scooters, bikes, fitness machines, etc. the list is extensive…
As of today, the configuration systems included more than 30 activity posts, others will be added along the evolution of the product range.
“The 3Dswipe team perfectly understood my needs and knew how to implement it in a powerful and user-friendly tool, which will allow our technicians to conceive their workspaces in an autonomous and efficient way. Thank you for this great collaboration.”
Aurélie Nicolas, Communication and Merchandising Leader, Decathlon
3D editing tools: user-friendliness and efficiency
3Dswipe gave extra thoughts and care on the conception and the ergonomics of the real-time 3D application, in order to ensure its user-friendliness.
There is a great number of tools and features, the user is constantly jumping from 3D product handling to the full workshop’s view, it all had to be intuitive, even for a new user.
Multiple real-time 3D features remind us of simulation video games:
- 3D workshop view from every angle and at every zoom level
- Selection, positioning, rotation of each 3D product
- Edition, duplication, removal and validation of each activity post
By clicking on the 3D model, the user opens a radial set of tools around the 3D object, allowing a quick overview and easy access to each available options.

to the field’s constraints
The user can position each 3D object on the 3D scene, almost entirely freely…
Indeed, there are several constraints specific to each activity post, that the 3Dswipe application takes into account while configurating the workshop.
Here are a few examples:
- Mandatory security area in front or around an activity post
- Obligation to position certain activity posts against a wall
- Specific posts dedicated to specific areas (eg. Storage area)
Impossibilities and incompatibilities are symbolized by a red mark on the ground and accompanied by an explanation pop-up: everything is designed to guide the user and guarantee a realistic configuration.
The integration of real constraints imposed to Decathlon store within the application ensures that each workshop configuration is realistic and technically possible to set up.
Versioning: users can create as many independent projects as wished in order to create their workshops. By elaborating variations of a same workspace, users can be creative and send propositions to the Directors. Versioning enables to compare different configurations and to opt for the best fit.
Project saving, loading and editing: all of the essential project management tools are available to offer users the ability to conceive their workshops with the greatest flexibility.
complete project validation cycle
Validation of selected references and associated budget: the application is based on a matrix which gathers all key data for each activity post and the parts needed for its production (shelves, supports, accessories, etc.) along with their pricing.
At any time, the user can export a data file including all the references positioned on the 3D workshop scene created within the 3D configurator, just like a detailed eCommerce cart. The format in which data is compiled perfectly complies with today’s purchasing process of the Decathlon Group.
The automated data export is a key benefit for Decathlon in terms of time saving, reliability and workshop validation process for each store.
Snapshot feature: sharing efficiently
Visual validation: alongside all the previous features, the user can generate HD visuals within the application using an interactive and intuitive editor allowing freedom of viewpoint and zoom. Visuals are automatically saved on the user’s computer and can be share for brainstorming and quick validation.
A multilingual application
Developed for a worldwide use, the 3D configuration system is available in no less than 13 languages in order to be rolled out to every Decathlon store.
The multilingual module allows to switch language at any time and automatically updated all the application content.
